Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday showered Ugadi-eve sops on below poverty line (BPL) families by offering them groceries every month for a subsidised price of Rs. 185.

“The poor would be provided with all the essential commodities such as edible oil, tamarind, mirchi powder, dal, salt, etc, which are actually priced at Rs. 292 in the open market,” Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy said while launching the SC and ST Sub Plan for 2013-14.

The promise, which intended to insulate the poor from the rising prices of essential commodities, would be effective from Ugadi on April 11 and the birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, which also coincidentally falls on the same day, he stated.

Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy claimed to have realised the dreams of Indira Gandhi by introducing the SC and ST Sub Plan with statutory powers to ensure checks against diversion and pilferage of funds under this head as was the practice in the past.

The Chief Minister’s promises include supply of free power to 10 lakh SC families for domestic consumption.
