Committee will look into it and suggest a way out, says Haribabu

BJP State president K. Haribabu on Sunday said that the Central Government was seized of the matter pertaining to increase in Assembly constituencies in Andhra Pradesh.

Addressing the media before taking part the State-level meeting of the BJP here on Sunday, he said that while a clarity was yet to emerge from the Centre on the issue, a committee was going into the matter and would come up with a solution.

“While Section 26 of the A.P. Reorganisation Act does provide for increase in the number of Assembly constituencies, Article 170 of the Constitution stipulates that the next review on the issue is possible only in 2026,” Mr. Haribabu said.

When asked whether the Centre had not betrayed the State on the promises made to it, he said that the government was constrained by the recommendations of the Finance Commission with regard to the Special Category Status, and hence had taken the route of special package to benefit the State more than the provisions made in the Reorganisation Act.
