House appeals to youth to desist from suicides

The Assembly has made a fervent appeal to the youth in the State to desist from committing suicides as a means to achieve goals.

On behalf of the House, Speaker N. Manohar read out a brief appeal shortly before adjourning the Assembly for the day amidst slogan-shouting by the members of Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Telugu Desam, BJP and Nagam Janardhan Reddy (Independent) who occupied the podium, demanding formation of separate Telangana State.

No reference, however, was made any where in the appeal to the Telangana region where three persons have committed suicide over the issue. Describing the youth as the hope of the country, Mr. Manohar said they were resorting to suicides for quite sometime, causing anguish to the Assembly besides their families and society in general. He said ample scope existed within the a parliamentary democratic system for finding a solution to any problem.

Political parties blamed

Staff Reporter adds: The Telangana Writers' Forum (TWF) also appealed to students and youth to observe restraint and not to resort to suicides. The body blamed political parties, particularly Congress and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for suicides of students and youth after being hurt with statements of politicians on the issue.

Speaking after releasing a book ‘Oopiri', a compilation of poems against the suicides edited by P. Srinivasa Rao and A. Rajitha, MLC Chukka Ramaiah appealed to the youth and students not to end lives and instead fight for the cause to achieve statehood to the region.

Senior journalists K. Ramachandra Murthy, K. Srinivas, Allam Narayana and others felt that disunity among political parties on the issue, and provocative attitude of a section of the media and some politicians were resulting in suicides.
