Taking serious note of the reported violation of child rights, the Prakasam District Child Welfare Committee has sought an explanation from the district police on the reported handcuffing of a 15-year-old boy by the Vetapalem police.

Meanwhile, the boy, who was produced before the Juvenile Justice court here, was sent to Juvenile home in Tirupati.

On a complaint from Childline India Foundation NGO partner HELP, Committee chairman B.V.S.K. Prasad asked Superintendent of Police Ch. Srikanth to submit a detailed report on the incident and action taken against errant police personnel.

The boy was picked up by the Vetapalem police for questioning in connection with a chain snatching case.

Meanwhile, the SP said action would be taken against errant police personnel on completion of probe by the Chirala DSP.

The NGO complained that the boy, Anand, had been handcuffed by a constable on duty on Monday for alleged violation of the provisions of the progressive Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000.

According to the act, minor boys or girls should be questioned only in the presence of their parents or a social activist. They should not also be detained in police station after sunset, HELP social activist B.V. Sagar said.
