Crime against women on the rise in Andhra Pradesh

Disturbing picture emerges from NCRB figures for 2016

Murders and crime against women saw a rise in Andhra Pradesh in the year 2016, as per the latest statistics of the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) released by the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Thursday.

In 2015, a total of 1, 099 murder cases were recorded in the State and in 2016 they went up to 1,123, taking AP to the 22nd position. Heading the list are Jharkhand, Meghalaya and Haryana.

Among the categories in murder, illicit relationship heads the list with 138 cases followed by property disputes (96), personal vendetta (85), dowry (49), and for gain (47). The category of illicit relationship has been heading the list in the last couple of years.

According to DCP (Crime), Visakhapatnam, T. Ravi Kumar Murthy, in AP, the three categories —illicit relationship, property disputes and personal vendetta — had been the main reasons for murders in the last few years.

In 2016, the cases recorded under this category stood at 16,363 compared with 15,967 in 2015. AP is ranked ninth in this category and heading the list are Assam and Odisha. The number of rape cases recorded stands at 995, including 15 gang rapes, and attempt to rape at 190.

Heading the list in crime against women is cruelty by husband with 6,466 cases followed by kidnapping and abduction (992) and suicide (405). Dowry cases stand at 194 and assault for outraging the modesty at 2,632.
