Communist Party of India (CPI) national general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy on Sunday said his party was all for the merger of all communist parties to make it a strong political force in the country to oppose coalitions that adopted “anti-people policies”.

He said the party had split in 1964 owing to differences among its leaders over the Indo-China war and other reasons. He was addressing the media at the Garimella Press Club here.

Mr. Reddy said there was no difference between the UPA and the NDA, as both adopted the same policies.

“Communist movement is need of the hour to oppose the anti-labour and anti-people’s policies. We will set up village-level and mandal-level committees in the next three years to strength the party at the grassroots level. The committees will take up local issues and protect the interests of people in the respective areas,” Mr. Reddy said.

He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not conducted a single meeting on the price rise issue but had organised over 40 meetings to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

“The CPI is more worried about the unprecedented price rise. We will organise nationwide agitations to step up pressure on the government to regulate the prices of essential goods,” he said. “The Union government is expected to introduce the Land Acquisition Bill again in Parliament for amendments after the Bihar election.

It will be detrimental to the interests of the entire nation. That is why we will continue to agitate,” he added.

CPI national committee member K. Narayana and party senior leaders J.V. Satyanarayana Murthy spoke about the large-scale land acquisition for Bhogapuram airport and Bhavanapadu sea port.

Reacting to the issue, Mr. Sudhakar Reddy said the government was creating a huge land bank although the required land was too little for those projects.
