The Congress party has taken serious exception to the call given by TDP leaders of Nellore district to block Telugu Ganga water for Chittoor district. It is for this Rs.5,400-crore drinking water project that Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy will be laying a foundation stone next week.

At a demonstration on Saturday, women sat on a relay fast, holding up empty pitchers and shouting slogans such as “Don’t stop Telugu Ganga”. PCC leader and former councilor P. Naveen Kumar Reddy said it was unfortunate for the TDP to play politics with sensitive issues such as water-sharing.

He said the mammoth project was designed to rid the arid Chittoor district of water woes for the next three decades, indicating that it would not harm the interests of Nellore district at all.

Taking exception to the provocative call “to break the pipeline” reportedly given by TDP leader Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, Mr. Naveen Reddy said nobody could stop the supply of water from Kandaleru to Chittoor.

Referring to the stoic silence maintained by TDP leaders of Chittoor district, he asked them to speak out or remain in history as ‘traitors’.
