Food served is substandard, students tell rights panel

Members of the A.P. State Commission for Protection of Child Rights who inspected the Sri Chaitanya College campus at Nidamanuru on Friday expressed shock over poor sanitation and facilities in the college.

Commission’s Chairperson G. Hymavathi and members V.S.V. Krishna Kumar and P.V.V. Prasad visited the campus in which an Intermediate first year student, Alamati Bhargava Reddy (16), died under suspicious circumstances in the hostel room.

When they visited the classrooms and dormitories, the students complained about the 12-hour study schedule per day and the poor facilities in the hostel. The students alleged that the food being served in the hostel was of very poor quality.

“If we question about the poor quality of food or the unhygienic conditions on the campus, the staff members are making unnecessary allegations against us and are taking revenge by complaining against us to our parents,” the students alleged.

Ms. Hymavathi said the stink emanating from the toilets indicated that they were not being maintained properly. More than 10 beds were there in each room in the hostel, and the inmates were staying in untidy conditions, she observed. “Though the management is collecting hefty fee from the parents, there is no vigil on or care for the students. Some students have brought to our notice that the hostel staff are not serving sufficient food and many students are going without food,” she said. Mr. Krishna Kumar said many were seen depressed due to lengthy study hours, and horrible facilities in the hostel and classrooms.

“The kitchen and dining halls are untidy. The students are staying in pathetic conditions,” said Mr. Prasad. He appealed to the parents to walk into the hostel premises and enquire about the facilities whenever they come to meet their children.
