CPI leader K. Ramakrishna suggests maintaining the water level of the reservoir at 854 ft

CPI State secretary K. Ramakrishna expressed concern over the fast depletion of water level at Srisailam reservoir to generate power and ensure water supply to downstream projects.

Speaking to the media at Nandyal on Sunday, he said the reservoir was depleted in an unprecedented way this year, jeopardising the interests of Rayalaseema irrigation canals.

He said the Left power house under the control of Telengana government used the water to the maximum level since the Telangana State needed power.

But, there was no regard for the Rayalaseema projects like SRBC, Galeru Nagari, Hundri Neeva, Telugu Ganga and KC canal which were dependent on Srisailam project. He said Irrigation Minister claimed to have written to the Telangana government about the issue, but there appeared to be no positive action.

Further, he said since the Telangana government needed power, Andhra Pradesh should supply 350 MW to Telangana in order to maintain the water level at Srisailam reservoir at 854 ft as was agreed in the past. If urgent steps were not taken, there would be a commotion in the areas dependant on the Srisailam waters.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ramakrishna asked the government to announce ex gratia for farmers who suffered losses on account of drought in Rayalaseema districts.
