Compensate Dalit victim’s family: NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the State government to pay a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh to the family of a Dalit man who had died in the custody of Dornala police in Prakasam district.

Theft case

Gona Bhoomaiah, who had been taken into custody in connection with a theft case, had died on July 4, 2010 owing to delay in giving timely medical treatment, the NHRC had concluded.

Order issued

The government directed the District Collector to pay compensation to the daughter of the deceased, Ms. Gona Venkataramana.

Dalit Hakkula Parirakshana Samiti district president Neelam Nagendra Rao, in a statement here on Tuesday, said justice had been done to the family of the deceased.
