Civil Supplies Minister Paritala Sunita on Monday kicked off distribution of ‘Chandranna Sankranti Kanuka’ here. Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Sunita said: “The government wants to make Sankranti sweeter for all in spite of the fact that it [gift package] is a drain on the State’s finances in the current situation.”

1.3 crore families

The Minister said a total of 1.3 crore families across the State would benefit from the scheme.

She also directed officials to ensure that the distribution of gift packages was finished in two days and warned them against being lax in discharging their duty.

Meanwhile, speaking at a function at Krishna Kala Mandir, Information and Public Relations Minister Palle Raghunatha Reddy said the scheme revealed the pro-people approach of the government.

He added that the government had taken a pro-poor view right from the launch of the debt waiver scheme.

“Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had launched the scheme to help the poor and make them feel that the government is there for them. Now, it is up to the officials to ensure that the scheme is implemented in the right spirit and time frame,” Mr. Raghunatha Reddy said after distributing the gift packages.

Anantapur MLA Vaikuntam Prabhakar Chowdary was also present.
