TDP leader Byreddy Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday announced his decision to join the BJP.

“I have received an invite from the BJP and will be joining it after Deepavali,” Mr. Reddy said while addressing the media after a meeting with his supporters at a function hall here.

Ahead of the general elections this year, Mr. Reddy, who hails from Nandikotkur, had quit the Congress to join the TDP. Seeing a change for the better in Rayalaseema, he said, “The BJP is in a better position to develop the region and the State.”

He termed the struggle for Special Category Status (SCS) as a “waste of time.” Mr. Reddy advised the political parties not to rake it up to garner votes.

Referring to the uncertainty over the Capital, he said that it should not have been shifted to Amaravati in the first place. Hyderabad should have been made the Capital for both the States, he opined.

On the deficit budget, Mr. Reddy blamed both TDP and YSRCP for the situation.

Both the parties had showered promises in the run-up to the elections, and to fulfil them money was required. “The promises made to garner votes are now breaking the back of the State,” he observed.

“The BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alone can redeem A.P.,” Mr. Reddy said, and exuded confidence that the party would come to power in the State in 2024.
