Biggest aftershock recorded in Nepal

Another NGRI seismologist D.Srinagesh said that as many as 34 aftershocks occurred till 1 p.m. on Sunday, including two of more than 6 magnitude.

The biggest aftershock measuring 6.7 on Richter Scale after the main earthquake of 7.9 magnitude in Nepal has occurred at 12.39 p.m. on Sunday on the eastern tip of the fault caused by the temblor.

The seismological observatory at CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) recorded the event.

Chief Scientist and Seismologist at NGRI R.K. Chadha said that the aftershock occurred at the eastern end of the fault which was propagated in the aftermath of the main shock. He said that this type of seismic activity of small and big tremors would continue for some more days, before it gradually gets tapered off.

Another NGRI seismologist D.Srinagesh said that as many as 34 aftershocks occurred till 1 p.m. on Sunday, including two of more than 6 magnitude and 13 of more than 5 magnitude. Soon after the main shock, an aftershock of 6.6 took place on Saturday.

He said that the depth of Sunday’s 6.7 aftershock was about 10 k.m.
