Students have a pivotal role in the propagation of the concept of energy conservation. They can become change agents, reach out to at least 10 persons among the family and friends and motivate them to embrace the concept, said A Chandrasekhar Reddy, CEO of Andhra Pradesh State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM), here on Tuesday.
He was addressing a workshop on Energy Conservation, organised by The Hindu , in association with the APSECM at the P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts and Science. Pointing to the fact that Andhra Pradesh was the only State which had continuously been bagging the energy conservation award for the last three years, he attributed the hat-trick record to the unstinted support and continuous monitoring of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
Mr. Chandrasekhar Reddy said AP was in the forefront in the implementation of energy efficiency programmes like UJALA wherein 2.17 crore LED bulbs were distributed to the consumers and over 6 lakh street lights installed in all municipalities. Extending the LED ‘revolution’ to the rural pockets, 30 lakh street lights were installed in villages in addition to 12 lakh solar agricultural pump sets that were of great help to farmers in bringing down their electricity bills, he said

Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering in the V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College, PVRL Narasimham, in his power-point presentation on ‘Energy Efficiency’, explained about the finite resources and infinite needs in the energy sector.
He said if the installed power capacity was 1,362 mw in 1947, the generation capacity as on November 23 this year was 3,31,118 mw. “Supply has increased more than 240 times and yet demand has outstripped it by several fold resulting in power shortages [11% peak time load]. Money cannot buy resources which take millions of years to regenerate and energy is the prime mover of all forms of sustainable life and it is naturally recycled in nature’s cosmic rhythm.”
