Contrary to the general apprehensions being expressed in certain sections, the bariatric surgeries help in providing immediate solution to the problem of obesity and also give considerable relief from its associated complaints like diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol.

The surgeries are allowed to be performed on persons in the age group from 12 to 60 years. “Depending on the condition of patients, the age limit can be stretched up to 70 years now. This is because of the availability of advanced and high-technology treatments,” said Dr. Prasanna Kumar Reddy, senior surgical gastroenterologist and laparoscopic surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.

He visited the Apollo Hospital, Nellore, here in connection with bariatric surgeries performed on some patients.
