Amazon opens its biggest warehouse

Around 500-600 people are expected to be employed at the Mahabubnagar facility

Amazon India launched its biggest fulfilment centre (warehouse) in Kothur, Mahabubnagar district, on Wednesday. The warehouse that has state-of-the-art facilities is spread across 2,80,000 sq ft. Minister for IT and Panchayat Raj, K.T. Rama Rao, inaugurated the facility.

The company has 11 warehouses in eight States across the country and the Mahabubnagar one will be the biggest among these.

The Minister, who was in talks with Amazon’s administrative heads in the U.S. earlier, said that a similar warehouse was expected to come up in Hyderabad soon. “Amazon also promised to set up its single biggest campus outside the United States in Hyderabad,” he said.

The Hyderabad campus, which will be of 2,50,000 sq ft in area, is expected to come up near Nanakramguda, Gachibowli.

Ten acres of land has already been identified for the same, the Minister said during his inaugural speech. Telangana is also expected to have an operational Amazon data centre and e-commerce centre soon.

The campuses are expected to bring in employment opportunities for local youth as the IT department expects around 500 to 600 people to be employed at the Mahabubnagar facility. “We are also ready to train Telangana youth to fit placement requirements of companies like Amazon,” Mr. Rao said.
