Agitated depositors seek CBI probe

AgriGold agents and customers burn the effigy of AgriGold Group of Companies chairman Avva Venkata Rama Rao in Ongole on Thursday.

AgriGold agents and customers burnt the effigy of AgriGold Group of Companies chairman Avva Venkata Rama Rao at the busy Church Centre here on Thursday for perpetrating a multi-crore inter-State scam.

The protesters, led by G. Seshagiri Rao and D. Sudhakar, also raised slogans against Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for what they termed as inordinate delay in the settlement of their dues and the tardy progress of inquiry being conducted by the State police.

The protesters, who observed a relay fast for the fourth day, said they did not have faith in the ongoing probe by the State police and demanded that the government recommend a CBI into the case. More than 40 lakh families were deceived by the firm and at least 80 persons had ended their lives or died of shock, claimed one of the victims Babu Rao while staging a sit-in in front of the office of AgriGold here.

The protesters demanded that all directors of the company and family members of the chairman be arrested and their assets confiscated. The depositors’ interests would be adversely affected if the State police did not prevent those arrested from getting bail, they said.
