July 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:03 am IST - GUNTUR:

The head of an unidentified man lying on the national highway at Atmakur village in Mangalagiri mandal created a flutter among the locals here on Tuesday morning.

The dismembered head of a man aged about 45 years was noticed by locals at about 6-30 am.

Hours after the incident, Guntur Urban Police were able to secure some leads and began examining the CCTV footage.

Suspecting that the severed head could have been dropped from a moving vehicle, the police started tracking the vehicles which have passed through the toll plaza at Kaza during the early hours.

But the sheer number of vehicles, numbering more than 9,000, could pose a formidable task for the police.

Guntur Urban Superintendent of Police Sarva Sresth Tripathi has personally examined the CCTV video recordings available at a private resort on the national highway.

The footage showed a stationary van on the approach road towards Ongole. The images of three persons on a motorcycle moving about suspiciously could offer some leads in the case.

The SP formed a special team from CCS headed by ASP B. Thiruppal which is studying the mobile phone data records through tower dump analysis.

Basing on preliminary investigation, police believe that the man could be aged between 40 and 45 years. His face sports a brush moustache and thick eye brows.
