Hundreds take part in ‘Olympic Run’

Hundreds of youngsters took part in ‘Olympic Run’ organised by East Godavari District Olympic Association on the occasion of World Olympic Day on Monday.

Deputy Education Officer and football player S. Abraham and Executive Director of Sunkara Bhaskar Rao Sports Development and Research Centre C.V.S. Sastry flagged off the run at Subrahmanya Maidan near Godavari railway station. An impressive number of students participated in the run.

The run passed through Gokavaram bus stand centre, Devi Chowk, Kambala Tank Circle and culminated in a meeting at the Government Arts College grounds. Sunkara Swami Naidu, vice-president of District Olympic Association, presided over the meeting.

Summer classes

Mr. Abraham said the municipal corporation and the education department were jointly conducting summer coaching classes and annual sports meet to encourage students in sports and urged private school managements to follow suit. The Olympic association felicitated kho-kho and ball-badminton personality K.V. Narasaiah, golfer Gadde Krishnamurthy and Sunkara Swami Naidu.

District Collector Neetu Prasad and Commandant of the APSP Rajesh Kumar flagged-off the ‘Olympic Run’ at the District Sports Authority stadium here.

The East Godavari District Olympic Association conducted the run from 23 different places in the district simultaneously. In the city, president and secretary of the association Y.D. Rama Rao and K. Padmanabham respectively and other sportspersons participated in the event. Students from different educational institutions participated in the run. District Educational Officer K.V. Srinivasulu Reddy was the torch-bearer.

A good number of physical education trainers, representatives of various sports and games associations, budding players and their parents participated in the event.
