Hudhud cyclone damage: AU taps alumni for rebuilding process

The cyclone not only devastated the academic and non-academic buildings and labs but also pulled down over 90 per cent of the green cover.

The 88-year-old Andhra University that was ravaged by cyclone Hudhud, is tapping its strong alumni for the rebuilding process. To initiate the process, the university organised an alumni meet here on Sunday. Constituting an alumni body, Vice-Chancellor of AU G.S.N. Raju nominated Andhra Pradesh Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivas Rao chairman of the body. The minister, an alumnus of the AU Law College, pledged to adopt the college that suffered extensive damage.

Mr. Srinivas Rao assured to take active part in the rebuilding process and assured to bring in a significant contribution from the government’s side. He advised the VC to constitute a rebuilding committee and take up the process in a systematic way.

The university suffered extensive damage, estimated to be about Rs. 237 crore. The cyclone not only devastated the academic and non-academic buildings and labs but also pulled down over 90 per cent of the green cover.

The meet was held at YVS Murthy auditorium, and was well attended by both present and former teaching and non-teaching staff members and present and former students. Even a few former students from abroad made it to the meet.
