Bhoomi puja for new capital likely in June 2nd week

Encouraged by the progress of land pooling for the construction of new capital the State government has tentatively scheduled the ‘ground breaking ceremony’ (bhoomi puja) on June 11 or 12. The exact venue will be decided by Chief Minister N. Chadrababu Naidu, according to sources.

The land pooling process has been gaining momentum despite resistance from a section of land owners and farmers had come forward to give 16,000 acres for the new capital till Wednesday evening.

“We have set a target to pool 15,000 acres by February 10 but we touched the mark on February 3 itself and we hope to get 20,000 acres by February 10,” said Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development P. Narayana from Thullur.

Simultaneously, the government sent a project report as sought by the Centre for getting funds before the end of current financial year. It includes expenditure for land pooling, setting up CRDA office and estimates for important buildings such as Assembly, Secretariat, Raj Bhavan, quarters for officers, MLAs and Ministers, offices of head of departments, hospitals, schools, internal roads, amenities like drinking water supply, drainage, connectivity to highways etc.

The MA&UD Department sent a proposal for immediate release of Rs.20,000 crore under capital city funding to the Finance Department to be forwarded to the Centre. The Singapore team promised to give the Master Plan and designs for the capital city by June-end.

After design finalisation, actual estimates of expenditure will be made. “Till then we requested the Centre to make provision for Rs.20,000 crore in the 2014-15 budget itself,” sources said.
