1.49 kg gold jewellery stolen from train passenger

Gold jewellery weighing 1.49 kg belonging to a woman passenger was stolen from the Secunderabad-bound Duronto express, which started from Visakhapatnam, in the early hours of Friday.

D. Nagasheshu Vani was coming to Secunderabad in an AC first class compartment along with her granddaughter to attend a marriage when the offence was committed.

The 50-year-old passenger told the Travel Ticket Examiner around 4.15 a.m. as the train reached Warangal that her bag containing jewellery was stolen.

She lodged a complaint with the Secunderabad railway police after the train arrived there. A case of theft was registered. The passenger’s daughter and son-in-law live in Chandanagar.

The Duronto has no stops from Visakhapatnam to Secunderabad except at Vijayawada where it stops for nearly 20 minutes. Since the passenger realised about the theft at Warangal, the case would be transferred to the Kazipet railway police.

“The video footage recorded at the railway station didn’t show any passengers or others getting in or out of the train,” an investigator told The Hindu . Police suspect that the bag was stolen before the train reached Warangal.
