The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Congress on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court’s directives to the Uttar Pradesh government on construction of memorials and described the court’s orders as timely.
An SP delegation met Governor B.L. Joshi here on Friday and demanded the dismissal of the Mayawati government.
Addressing a Press conference here, Leader of the Opposition in the U.P. Assembly Shivpal Singh Yadav welcomed the court’s directives and accused the State government of frittering away public money on memorials, parks and statues.

The party’s State unit president Akhilesh Yadav said that the Centre was equally to be blamed for environmental clearance to the Noida park as the same was done without environmental impact clearance.
He said he would seek information on the subject under the Right to Information Act.
At a separate press conference, the president of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, also hailed the court directive. She said the verdict was significant for maintaining the rule of law in the State. Describing the order as “very timely”, Dr. Joshi said it had exposed the Bahujan Samaj Party government.

Accusing Chief Minister Mayawati of adopting a dictatorial approach, the UPCC president said the priority of the government appeared to be its self-glorification. She alleged that the only law that was followed in U.P. was that of Ms. Mayawati herself.
On the atrocities on Dalit women, Dr. Joshi said the incidents had increased.
Stating that the government had lost the right to govern, she said the Congress would launch an agitation on the issue.
The vice-president of the UP unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Hridaya Narain Dixit also welcomed the court’s directives.
