Railways put on alert for Durga Puja

The Railways have issued a red alert in preparedness to thwart any attack by terrorists on trains and its properties during the Durga Puja festivities. Railway Board Chairman S.S.Khurana said that in the wake of fears being expressed in certain quarters, a red alert had been sounded and the authorities concerned were directed to keep a vigil to thwart any nefarious designs by terrorists.

Even with regard to threats from naxalites, Mr. Khurana maintained that the States were consulted and the

Railway Protection Force(RPF) were asked to keep a watchful eye on the safety of the tracks to ensure smooth running of trains.

Earlier speaking at the Safety Convention 2009, Mr. Khurana linked safety with productivity and maintained that

with investments in safety the profitability of the railways increased significantly. It not only contributed to productivity but also helped industry maximize efficiency and minimise downtime. The railways have decided to man 5,000 out of the 17,000 unmanned level crossings in the first phase. Mr. Khurana said that more people would be recruited for the purpose.
