Railways offer VRS to cope with security issues

July 14, 2010 01:27 am | Updated 01:27 am IST - NEW DELHI

The Railways seem to have identified its aging staff as a problem in coping with security issues and have offered VRS to such staff who have attained the age of 50.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said this at a meeting of the All-India Running Staff Conference organised by the All-India Railwaymen's Federation on Tuesday. She agreed to consider providing jobs to the wards of those opting for VRS. Ms. Banerjee said she was considering making a provision for reserving a certain percentage of jobs in Group D for wards of railway employees.

She also promised to clear the backlog of 1.47 lakh vacancies in the Railways.
