Even as the government awaits a Supreme Court directive on banning porn sites in the country, a parliamentary panel has recommended appointing an ombudsman to handle complaints on cyber porn.
“In India, the number of women and child abuse cases are on the rise and exposure to pornography is one of the causes for increase in such heinous crimes,” the Rajya Sabha’s Committee on Petition observed. The move comes soon after the government notification to Internet services providers on July 30 to ban 857 porn websites, which kicked up a storm on social media. The government later clarified that the order pertained only to those websites that promoted child pornography and was on Supreme Court orders.
But Internet service providers said they did not have the mechanism to filter out from the URLs content that dealt with child pornography. As a result, all 857 websites continue to remain blocked.
