Presiding officers' meet today

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will inaugurate the 75th conference of presiding officers of legislatives bodies from different parts of the country in Srinagar on Sunday.

The two-day conference, to be held at the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, would deliberate on the growing tendency to disrupt the question hour and the significance of the committee system in Parliament.

This is the fourth such conference in Srinagar. The earlier ones were in 1954, 1970 and 1987.Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha K. Rahman Khan and Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha Karia Munda will participate.

The Speaker will also inaugurate an exhibition ‘Legislatures in India: the pillars of democracy,' set up by the Lok Sabha Secretariat in collaboration with the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

A symposium on ‘Performance of legislators in the House — ensuring accountability to the people' will be held on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a conference of secretaries of legislative bodies was held in the committee room of the J&K Asembly on Saturday. Lok Sabha Secretary-General P.D.T. Achary inaugurated the conference and Rajya Sabha Secretary-General V.K. Agnihotri addressed the gathering.
