The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday accepted the verdict of the people in the municipal elections but said it will work hard to win the trust of the people. The party also rejected the demand that assembly elections be advanced on the basis of these results.
``We have suffered losses in the municipal elections but we are confident that our party will work hard to win the confidence of the people’’, party general secretary Prakash Karat told `The Hindu’ here.
While accepting defeat in the civic elections, Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said the demand to advance the Assembly election cannot be made on the basis of the results in which the Trinamool Congress scored an emphatic victory.

He said these polls were in urban areas that account for 17 per cent of total electorate. ``It is less than one-fifth of the total state electorate. 83 per cent of the people did not participate in these elections. So, this does not constitute any basis for demanding advancement [of assembly elections]’’, he told correspondents here
The Trinamool Congress Chief and Union Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded that the elections to the West Bengal assembly due next year be advanced in the light of the mandate her party secured in civic polls.
Interpreting the verdict as the Left Front having halted the reverses it suffered during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, Mr Yechury said there has been a marginal improvement of over four per cent since the 2009 general elections.
