Parliament winter session likely in November second week

The winter session of Parliament is likely to commence in the second week of November. Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today expressed the possibility when asked about reports that the session is likely to begin on November 9. She, however, said no decision has been taken so far.

Reports had it that the session is likely to be a six-week affair. Normally the winter session lasts for four weeks beginning in the last week of November to end just before the Christmas.

Replying to questions, Ms. Kumar felt Parliament should sit at least 110 days in a year.

The Speaker, who is leading a Parliamentary delegation to the 55th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Arusha in Tanzania from September 29 to October 5, favoured more sittings of Parliament.

The theme of the conference is ‘Meeting Future Global Challenges’. The Speaker is the president of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), Indian region.

She will be the lead speaker in the workshop on ‘The Role of Parliament in Shaping the Information Society’.
