Pakistan quotes Nehru

A day after India cautioned Pakistan over pro-Kashmir rallies, calling them a “futile effort,” the Pakistan government invoked statements of former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. “In its efforts to write a mythical history, India has forgotten the acknowledgement and commitments by its first Prime Minister on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. I would like to remind them of these commitments,” said Tasneem Aslam, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, in Islamabad.

Ms. Aslam quoted Nehru’s message on October 27, 1947, to the PMs of Pakistan and the U.K.:“I should like to make it clear that the question of aiding Kashmir in this emergency is not designed in any way to influence the State to accede to India. Our view is that the question of accession in any disputed territory must be decided in accordance with the wishes of the people… ”
