With BlackBerry smartphone-maker Research In Motion (RIM) still non-committal on putting up its server for monitoring e-mails and messages, as desired by Indian law enforcement agencies, the Centre on Friday reiterated that it would not compromise on security issues and would ban the services on August 31, 2010, as decided earlier.
“We will not risk our national security, especially when answers to the problem have been found elsewhere in the world. When RIM has addressed these concerns in other parts of the world, I see no reason why the Indian government and security agencies should take any risk at all as far technology is concerned,” Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology, told journalists.
The Canadian company has been warned by the Union Home Ministry to provide Indian law enforcement agencies access to its messenger and enterprise (email) service by August 31, 2010 or its services would be blocked. As the meeting between government officials and RIM on Thursday failed to resolve the issue, the Home Ministry is likely to take a final decision on Monday.
