Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday questioned the efficacy of the Narendra Modi government’s diplomatic drive with regards to garnering support of a few other countries excluding China in its pursuit of Nuclear Suppliers Group membership.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited countries like Mexico and Switzerland seeking their support for entry of India into NSG club. A public statement was also issued that both countries extended their support for the cause. But what happened when the issue of India’s membership was taken up in Seoul this week,” questioned CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury addressing a press conference here.
Mr. Yechury said the Modi government even failed to ensure support of Brazil and South Africa with which the country shared good relationship in several multinational forums like BRICS and IBSA respectively.

“It is very convenient to blame China for the failure, but what about other countries,” the CPI (M) leader said. “We need to find out how India presented its case before international community for NSG membership. We are waiting for government’s detail accounts of diplomatic drive for the membership,” he said. “I being a member of Parliamentary Consultative Committee on External Affair will definitely seek a response from the government,” Mr. Yechury said.
The veteran CPI (M) leader said the Modi government had messed up the country’s foreign policy. “India had all along been maintaining neutrality in its foreign policy. But the foreign policy pursued by Modi government made the country as junior strategic partner of USA,” said Mr. Yechury.
He said CPI (M) along with other Left parties were preparing to launch a massive mass movement against damaging domestic and foreign policies of the NDA government from July 11 to 17.
