‘Why Z security for riot-accused MLA?’

August 27, 2014 03:50 am | Updated December 04, 2021 11:22 pm IST - New Delhi:

The Union Home Ministry’s decision to extend Z-category security cover to BJP MLA Sangeet Som, who is one of the accused in the Muzaffarnagar riots, has triggered sharp reactions from other political parties.

Based on intelligence inputs suggesting that Mr. Som could be targeted by extremist elements, the MHA has intimated the Uttar Pradesh Police that his security has been upgraded to Z-category, the second highest level of security provided to people facing serious threat.

Accordingly, the BJP MLA — who was earlier provided Y-category security by the U.P. police on the court directive — will be given an escort car and nearly two dozen personnel to guard him.

While the BJP defended the government’s move stating that it was a professional decision based on inputs from intelligence agencies about serious threats to Mr. Som’s life, Congress leaders have stated that it was ironic that those who have been accused of involvement are being provided security when those affected by the communal riots were suffering.

The Janata Dal (United) demanded that his Z-category security cover be withdrawn, stating that the government’s decision could further fuel communal disharmony in the state and create a sense of insecurity and alienation among minorities.
