Modi's surprise visit to Lahore evokes hope in Kashmir

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise stopover in Pakistan on his return home from Russia has evoked hope and expectations among separatist and mainstream political parties in Jammu and Kashmir.

Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed welcomed Mr. Modi’s meeting with his Pakistani counterpart, saying: “This is an evolutionary process and step in the right direction. It indicates the Prime Minister’s resolve to enter into a long-term strategic partnership with Pakistan.”

National Conference working president Omar Abdullah, tweeted: “The re-engagement with Pakistan is a good step and a very welcome development. However, more than grand gestures, we need consistency.”
