Meet on poll reforms in June: Moily

February 03, 2010 02:01 am | Updated 02:01 am IST - NEW DELHI

Union Law and Justice Minister M. Veerappa Moily on Tuesday said a two-day national-level consultative meeting will be organised by his Ministry here in June to discuss electoral reforms, including state funding of elections.

Stakeholders, including representatives of political parties and experts, would present their views at the seminar, which would also touch upon criminalisation and communalisation of politics, ways to prevent money/muscle power in polls, caste-based politics, etc., Mr. Moily told journalists here.

On the suggestion of Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla that constitutional provisions be amended to provide equal powers to the Election Commissioners (including the CEC) and an amendment on removal of the ECs, he said it was under examination.

Mr. Chawla had suggested that the ECs be removed only by Parliament through impeachment (like the provision specified for the CEC) and not the present provision — “by the President on the recommendation of the CEC.”
