March 19, 2016 03:08 am | Updated November 17, 2021 05:07 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Vowing to wage a battle for scrapping the sedition law, JNU student’s union president Kanhaiya Kumar on Friday welcomed the interim bail for his fellow students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya.

“Those who support democracy should come together. It will be a long battle. We have been given the bail. We will go on with our struggle to ensure that the sedition law is scrapped,” Mr. Kumar said.

Khalid and Bhattacharya, arrested last month on charges of sedition for their involvement in a controversial event organised to protest the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, were on Friday granted interim bail for six months by a Delhi court. “I have been to jail. I know what it feels to be there. I am glad our comrades will be back but the struggle will continue,” said Mr. Kumar.
