Even as it raised questions about the long-pending trial of two Italian marines accused of killing Indian fishermen off the Kerala coast, the Supreme Court on Thursday granted a third furlough to one of them, Massimiliano Latorre, to stay back in Italy till July 15.
Mr. Latorre, who suffered a brain stroke, was allowed to leave for Italy in September 2014 to be with his family. In January this year, he requested another three months’ leave from the Supreme Court. It was granted.
With only a few days left for the deadline to end, the marine had sought three more months’ time on medical grounds. A Special Bench of Justices Anil R. Dave, Kurian Joseph and Amitava Roy allowed it after he agreed to give an undertaking of his bonafide, as earlier.
