Indian scholar gets Heidelberg university professorship

Indian science historian Dhruv Raina will take over the professorship for the newly created Heinrich Zimmer Chair for Indian Philosophy and Intellectual History at Heidelberg University on Monday next. The Chair has been awarded by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and the Cluster of Excellence ‘Asia and Europe in a Global Context' as well as the Heildelberg University's South Asia Institute.

Indian ambassador to Germany Sudhir Vyas will participate in the opening ceremony.

Prof. Raina received his Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science from Göteborg University (Sweden). He is currently Professor of History of Science and Education at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi (India). His research areas are the theory and history of science in India, focussing on the philosophical and sociological aspects.

MoU signed

For the establishment of the Chair, Heidelberg University and the ICCR — the highest-ranking institution for the promotion of international cultural exchanges — had signed a “Memorandum of Understanding” in November 2009. It is the first professorship of its kind and is being initially awarded for two years.
