The Communist Party of India on Sunday backtracked on a statement made by its leader in the Lok Sabha, Gurudas Dasgupta, that the party was withdrawing its demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the 2G spectrum scam.
The CPI central secretariat issued a statement contradicting Mr. Dasgupta's remark.
The party, however, claimed that Mr. Dasgupta was “thoroughly misquoted.”

“What he said was that while not withdrawing the demand for JPC, Parliament should allow discussion not only on JPC, but also other important people's issues,” the statement said.
On Saturday, Mr. Dasgupta was quoted as saying that “we are withdrawing our demand for JPC... for one demand to hold up Parliament is wrong.”
He said the most important issue today was economic policies and price rise. “Parliament must meet, must discuss, Parliament hold-up should not continue,” he had said.

CPI (M) Parliamentary party leader Basudev Acharia said it could not withdraw the demand for the JPC, but would see that Parliament was not disrupted.
“Our general secretary Prakash Karat has made our position clear that we will continue to ask for JPC.”
He said the party would continue to put pressure on the government till it agreed to form the JPC.
