Godse glorification upsets Gandhians

Mahatma Gandhi’s followers have come out strongly against the ongoing attempts to glorify Nathruam Godse and the “BJP government’s encouragement” to them.

Patrons of Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal, an organisation dedicated to promoting Gandhian ideals, questioned the Narendra Modi government’s encouragement to those opposing Gandhian principles and glamorising Godse.

Social activist Ram Puniyani said there was a “clash between two types of nationalism. One was led by Babasaheb Ambedkar, Bhagat Singh and Mahatma Gandhi, which stood for Indian nationalism and valued the tenets of the Indian Constitution during the fight for independence. And then we have the nationalism in the name of religion.”

Film release delayed

The Hindu Mahasabha has failed to meet its deadline on the release of a film venerating Godse.

The Mahasabha was scheduled to release ‘Desh Bhakt Nathuram Godse’ (Patriot Nathuram Godse) on January 30, the day Godse gunned down Gandhi in 1948. However, it has not been able to do so for technical reasons, Mahasabha spokesperson Dinesh Bhogale said.

The film, which faces legal opposition, is waiting for clearance from court.
