Madhav Sadashiv Gore, the former chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and a Padma Bhushan awardee, died here on Friday. He was 89.
Born here on August 15, 1921 his education took place in Dharwad, Pune, and Sangli. He studied at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Social Service Administration and got selected for the Sir Dorabji Tata Research Fellowship.
He received a Master's degree in Sociology from the University of Bombay in 1948 and later obtained a doctoral degree from Columbia University in 1961.

After serving in several educational institutions including the Delhi School of Social Work, Dr. Gore served as the director of the TISS till 1982. He was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bombay from 1983 to 1986 and Chancellor of JNU between 1997 and 2002. He was also the visiting lecturer at the Beloit College and the Department of Sociology in the University of Wisconsin in the United States during the years 1960-61.
He was honoured with a special award, by the Indian Council of Social Welfare, for outstanding contribution to social work by a social scientist. He became a recipient of the Padma Bhushan award in 1975.
In 2006, he received the Life Time Achievement award from the Indian Sociological Society. Since 2003, he has been engaged in the translation of several novels and stories from Marathi into English.
