Court has allowed him to extend stay for 6 more months.

The Supreme Court on Monday allowed Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre, who along with a colleague, is accused of killing two Indian fishermen three years ago, to stay in Italy for six more months on medical grounds, after the government did not object to his plea.

A Bench ordered that the six-month extension of stay will start from July 15.

The National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) has protested against Monday’s Supreme Court order allowing Italian marine Massimiliano Lattore to stay in Italy for six more months on medical grounds.

NFF all-India secretary T. Peter said the international meeting (July 14 to 19) of the World Forum of Fisher People in Puducherry will take up the issue. “The apathy of successive governments has created uncertainty when it comes to delivering justice to the fishing community,” he alleged.

He said the Centre’s stand paved the way for such an order which had badly hurt the fishing community.
