The Centre will release a report on employment within a month, to tackle the problems of workers caused by the global meltdown and drought, Labour and Employment Minister Mallikarjun Kharge said on Wednesday.
The Ministry had already begun consultations with experts and stakeholders towards preparation of the report, which would seek the views of the public on the state of employment in the country and spur a national debate. It would also touch on decent and sustainable livelihood for the people, the Minister told journalists here.
Earlier, participating in a “National Seminar on Report to the People on Employment,” organised by his Ministry and the International Labour Organisation, Mr. Kharge stressed the need for balancing the concerns of competitiveness of enterprises with employment generation, maintaining the rights of the labour to decent working and living standards.

Major employment trends in the country indicated that ‘casualisation’ had increased and the proportion of the organised sector in total employment declined steadily. While the major growth area of employment was in the service sector, it had slackened in the primary sector. Employment growth slackened, coinciding with high rates of the growth of the national economy.
Employment generation called for a multi-sectoral and multi-pronged approach, which might include creation of better wages and wider avenues of assured self-employment, the Minister said.
