Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today claimed that the state’s economy was sound and the government was ready to submit a white paper on it as demanded by the opposition AGP.

“The government has nothing to hide and is prepared to present a white paper in the next assembly session on the economic condition of the state which is sound,” Mr. Gogoi told reporters here.

Mr. Gogoi’s comments came following allegations made by AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary that the state’s economy had worsened during the Congress regime.

“We had dared the opposition (AGP) to bring up the matter for discussion in the Assembly. But as they did not, the government will table a resolution to discuss the financial status of the state in the next session,” he said.

Rubbishing Mr. Patowary’s charges, the chief minister said the state’s per capita income was on the rise and its growth rate was the best among the North Eastern states.

Referring to the success of Congress in the three autonomous councils for the tribals, Deuri, Tiwa and Thangal Kachari communities, Mr. Gogoi said this had shown that the people had rejected the AGP-BJP combine.
