EC trying to hold Bihar polls with available Central forces

August 25, 2010 01:42 am | Updated 01:42 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Election Commission is considering all options to hold election to the 243-member Bihar Legislative Assembly with the available Central police forces as Home Secretary G.K. Pillai has expressed his inability to fully meet the requirements of the Commission.

Mr. Pillai met Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi and Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath here on Tuesday to discuss the deployment of Central forces in Bihar as the State was facing threats from Maoists in some areas. Sources said the Commission worked out the policing requirements based on the discussions it had with the State Chief Electoral Officer and Director-General of Police this month. For security reasons, they refused to give details of the exact number of companies requested by them.Though more Central companies had to be deployed in Delhi during October 3 - 14 for the Commonwealth Games, it is not necessary that the entire forces will be in Delhi then, and elections in Bihar cannot be held during that period.
