An advocate has moved the Supreme Court for a directive to the Centre to initiate a judicial inquiry against the former Chief Justice of India, K.G. Balakrishnan's family members after removing him from the post of Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission.
In his petition, Manoharlal Sharma alleged that as per the recent disclosure in the media, the assets of Mr. Balakrishnan's son-in law and daughter were worth several crores of rupees. However, the affidavit his son-in-law Sreenijin filed for contesting the 2006 Assembly elections as a Congress candidate from Njarackal in Kerala showed that he had owned assets worth a mere Rs. 25,000.
Mr. Sharma alleged when Mr. Balakrishnan served as the Chief Justice of India from January 2007 to May 2010, Mr. Sreenijin acquired property worth several crores of rupees.

In this context, he referred to Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer's demand for a judicial probe into the alleged amassing of wealth by Mr. Sreenijin. Since Mr. Balakrishnan is now the NHRC Chairman, Mr. Sharma argued, he must be removed from the post till the investigation was concluded.
