Congress happy with SC verdict

December 02, 2015 12:14 pm | Updated November 17, 2021 02:05 am IST - NEW DELHI:

After the Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down the Tamil Nadu Government’s decision to release seven killers of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the Congress expressed its “satisfaction” over the verdict.

Senior Congress leader and spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala told The Hindu that State Government had no authority to decrease the sentence of persons who were convicted by the central law.

Mr.Surjewala said that it seemed the Tamil Nadu Government wanted to score political points based on an “erroneous” interpretation of the law that sought to cancel the lifetime imprisonment of the seven persons whom the court pronounced guilty in Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case.

Another senior Congress leader, Shakeel Ahmed said that the SC's decision vindicated Congress' stand that "life imprisonment of Rajiv Gandhi's killers was meant for an entire life. This will give a message that after committing such a heinous crime it will be difficult for anyone to escape."
