The Union Law and Justice Ministry has asked the Supreme Court and High Courts for information about judges who are airing their views on blogs and the social networking site, Twitter.

A communication to this effect has been addressed to the Secretary-General of the Supreme Court and the Registrars-General of the High Courts, asking them to respond after eliciting information from the judges, informed sources told The Hindu .

The letter was a sequel to a parliamentary question “whether the government is aware that at present some High Court judges are airing their views through blogs and Twitter. If so, is it not against the code of conduct for judges? And if so, what preventive measures are being taken to check this trend?” Before answering the question, the government wanted to get the response from the judiciary, the sources said.

Justice D.V. Shylendra Kumar of the Karnataka High Court had aired his views on his blog on the then Supreme Court collegium, headed by the former Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan, and on declaration of assets by judges.

Justice Shylendra Kumar started his blog ‘justdvskumar' in August last year and posted details of the assets owned by him and his wife, Veena Kumar. He was the first judge to make public his assets while the issue was still being considered by the judiciary.

Justice K. Kannan of the Punjab and Haryana High Court is another judge who has been airing his views through a blog.
