The Mandya Zilla Raitha Hitarakshana Samiti has decided to lay siege to Union and State government offices in Mandya district for four days from Thursday.

Samiti members told presspersons here on Wednesday that samiti president and the former MP G. Made Gowda and others would hold a relay fast from Thursday.

Earlier, speaking to The Hindu near Krishnaraja Sagar, where he staged a protest on Wednesday, Mr. Made Gowda said the samiti would intensify protests against the release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu.

He criticised the government for releasing the water to comply with the Cauvery River Authority directive.

“Farmers in the Cauvery basin are getting a raw deal. Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar broke his promises to farmers by releasing Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu,” he charged.

Terming Wednesday’s ‘jail bharo’ a big success, K.T. Srikante Gowda, former MLC, said: “Mr. Shettar called an emergency meeting in Bangalore on Wednesday. [The samiti’s] future course of action will be based on its outcome.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday too, various outfits staged protests across the district on the Cauvery issue.

Traffic between Bangalore and Mysore was disrupted by the roadblocks.
