The 21st Congress of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday night urged the government to declare the Internet a public utility and called upon people to join the ongoing struggle world over against the “unholy nexus between telecom and internet companies”.
According to the resolution, the revenue of telecom companies from data services had doubled in 2014 and was enough to build infrastructure. “Without >Net neutrality , telecom companies have a perverse incentive to not expand infrastructure, and create scarcity” after which only big companies and the rich would be able to offer content and services through the Internet.
Condemning the “so-called” consultation document of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Net neutrality, the CPI(M) said: “Without Net neutrality, companies can offer limited Internet with few services and slow down sites based on who pays.”
